Yinka Ilori for MoMA Subu Slippers

MoMA Exclusive: The Subu Slippers that everyone loves have been reimagined with vibrant prints by London-based multi-disciplinary artist Yinka Ilori, who specializes in fusing his British and Nigerian heritage to tell new stories in contemporary design. Known for his bold use of bright colors inspired by West African textiles, Ilori has applied his signature style to these special edition slippers.


Each of the patterns he has created has meanings associated with West African culture.

• Dots (Sun & Trees) - These motifs portray the return of longer summer days and a fresh start after a long winter.
• Hearts (Mo Dupe) - Mo Dupe means “I’m thankful.” The artwork celebrates presence and encourages people to cherish what they have, whether it’s family, friends, material things or love—because life is precious.
• Green & Yellow (Obi) - This pattern pays homage to the fruit of the obi kola nut tree, native to West Africa. Kola is prized throughout West Africa by the poor and the affluent; by men and women; by Muslims, Christians and animists. It is a shared experience, a powerful cultural symbol. It is given to show respect and as a sacred offering.

Subu Slippers are not just made for lounging—they can also be worn outside for quick dog walks and trips to the mailbox or your corner store. They’re both stylish and functional, featuring soft-cushioned insoles filled with polyester down for warmth, making them ideal for winter. (Think: a warm down jacket for your feet.) Subu Slippers have durable soles and the outer nylon shell is stain- and water-resistant, thanks to a special Teflon coating, so you can brave snowy or rainy days during those quick jaunts. The coating also repels oil-based liquids. Fun fact: Subu is a shortened version of the Japanese expression “sutto haku butsu,” which means slip-on shoes or shoes you can put on in the blink of an eye. Slippers come in a match drawstring bag.
