Ernõ Rubik, an architect and design professor based in Budapest, originally created his iconic Rubik’s Cube to help his undergraduate students think geometrically, but soon his colorful, and notoriously difficult, teaching aid rose to prominence as the world's best-selling toy. Though this tricky little puzzle comes without instructions, the goal is universally intuited by anyone who gives it a twist since it appeals to our innate desire to create order from chaos. An elegant interior mechanism allows for 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 possible positions. The Rubik's Cube is represented in MoMA’s collection and was featured in Century of the Child: Growing by Design, 1900-2000. Measures 2.4" cube. For ages 8+.
